  • English Name - Sesame

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is a tropical and subtropical plant cultivated for its seeds. We can find this plant and its wild species in Africa and India.

Its seeds can yield about 50% of high-quality edible oil. Many people use sesame oil meal, the by-product of sesame oil extraction, as a feed ingredient.

It is an annual or occasionally perennial species. Sesame plants grow to 50-250 cm in height.

The rest of its morphology is extremely variable. The plant is branched or unbranched, and it sprouts leaves in variable shapes and sizes. Its leaves grow in the alternate or opposite direction. This sequence is uncertain. Its leaves, flowers, and seeds thrive in optimal conditions.

When they mature, the leaves and stems turn yellow to red. Typically, it takes 123-135 days for unimproved sesame plants to reach maturity. Commercial varieties grow in a shorter time (90-120 days).
