Why will you love Turmeric?

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is one of the herbs that has received much attention from both the medical/scientific worlds as well as from the culinary world. This “earthy herb of the Sun” with the orange-yellow rhizome was regarded as the “herb of the Sun” by the people of the Vedic period. It is an amazing herb with powerful antioxidant action, promotes free radical fighting within the body and overall body performance. Also supports a healthy inflammatory response throughout the entire body and promotes optimal joint and muscle function. Turmeric helps to modulate a healthy immune response and maintains a healthy liver by detoxification. It also aids in promoting blood sugar metabolism and minimizing oxidative stress at the cellular level. It promotes healthy skin and appearance by purifying the blood and stimulating the formation of new blood tissue. Turmeric is a bitter digestive aid that maintains healthy gut flora and promotes healthy digestion. The essential volatile oils present in turmeric also support proper functioning of respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Due to its bitterness it balances Kapha, while it's warmness pacifies Vata dosha and aids in clearing the srotas (subtle channels). Turmeric helps in mobilizing Kapha by opening the blood vessels in order to improve blood circulation, while it aggravates Pitta when taken in excess.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is also available in powder form. Consuming turmeric powder in the form of boiled tea or milk strengthens immune system defenses and empowers positive overall well-being.

The major active constituent responsible for the biological activity of Curcuma longa (Turmeric) is Curcumin. Curcumin, the main natural polyphenol found in the rhizome of turmeric has been proven to have clinical therapeutic and its antioxidant properties. It plays an important role in the management of chronic inflammation diseases. It contains 2-5% of Circumin in its raw/natural state.

Plant Morphology

Turmeric is an essential spice all over the world with a distinguished human use particularly among the Eastern people. Turmeric is a plant distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is widely cultivated in Asian countries, mainly in China and India. It is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant that measures up to 1 m high with a short stem. Its palmate leaves are oblong in shape, alternate and arranged in two rows, which are further divided into leaf sheath and later form false stem, petiole and leaf blade. Plants have rough segmented, yellow to orange, cylindrical and aromatic rhizomes. Primary rhizome is mostly pear shaped known as a “bulb” while the secondary one is cylindrical. Its flowers are dull yellow, grouped together in a dense spike-like structure.
