What Does Ayurveda Say about the Benefits of Triphala for Gastrointestinal Health & Toxin Removal Support?

In Sanskrit, Triphala literally means three fruits. This name refers to its unique Ayurvedic formula, which combines the goodness of Emblica officinalis (Amalaki), Terminalia bellerica (Vibhitaki), and Terminalia chebula (Haritaki). We use dried organic powder of these fruits to create this herbal blend.

Ayurvedic practitioners regard it as one of the most versatile herbal formulations. They associate it with several health benefits while maintaining a balance between all three doshas (i.e Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha).

Each of its core ingredients is responsible for the benefits of Triphala. Their synergistic actions support gastrointestinal health. It is equally beneficial for immune support, digestive health, and liver care.

The pulp of Amalaki fruit has a high concentration of Vitamin C. This fruit’s cooling potency supports Pitta reduction. It also functions as the main rejuvenator when compared to the other ingredients in this herbal blend.

Similarly, Vibhitaki is another powerful Ayurvedic cleanser. It provides toxin removal support for blood circulation, muscle, and fatty tissues.

Additionally, it stimulates the natural cleansing mechanism inside the body. It bolsters liver functions by supporting the removal of accumulated toxins. It also supports Kapha balance, which is critical for functioning of other vital organs.

Lastly, Haritaki is a digestive herb. It nourishes our gastrointestinal tract and encourages colon cleansing. Its warmness supports a stable and calm Vata. The combination of these actions aids digestive health. They also support the absorption and assimilation of nutrients, along with maintaining healthy bowel movements.

In addition, the presence of flavonoids and other bioactive phytonutrients help maintain eye health. Overall, Triphala’s tridoshic formula supports optimal health and wellness with its abundant health benefits.

Which Natural Phytonutrients Are Found Inside Triphala for Gastrointestinal Health?

Triphala’s major phytoconstituents include tannins, gallic acid, ellagic acid, and chebulinic acid. These potent nutrients support healthy cells. They also contribute to the formula’s support of immunomodulatory activity.

Besides this, the herbs also contain other bio-active components such as flavonoids (e.g., quercetin and luteolin), saponins, anthraquinones, amino acids, fatty acids, and various carbohydrates. This combination results in the effective rejuvenation of our gastrointestinal health and digestion.

Plant Morphology

Amalaki grows in the tropical regions of India. It is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree, which grows up to 20-60 feet tall. A gray-green and flaky bark covers its crooked trunk and spreading branches. Its leaves are closely set together and are 4-8 inches long. They resemble pinnate leaves with their light green hues.

Amalaki flowers come in greenish-yellow colors. They bear depressed globose fruits that contain brown seeds. These fleshy fruits turn light yellow or brick red when they are ripe.

Vibhitaki is a large deciduous tree that measures up to 66 feet. It grows throughout the Indian forests and plains with broadly elliptic leaves that cluster together to form a distinctive rounded crown.

Its greenish-yellow flowers are simple and sweet. They grow in axillary spikes and secrete a strong honey-like smell. They bear green fruits that are in size and turn yellow when they mature.

Native to southern Asia and India, the deciduous tree, Haritaki, grows up to 100 feet in height. Its cylindrical bole bears rounded, spreading branches that sprout long elliptical shape leaves. Their leaves have an acute tip and cordate base.

It produces short-stalked, dull white to yellow flowers with a pungent smell with terminal spikes or short panicles. The fruits are yellowish-green (1-2 inches long) with an oval seed.

The smooth, yellowish-green ovoid drupes reach 1-2 inches long and about 1/2inch broad and inside, they contain one oval seed.
