Habit One · The Tongue Scraper · lightly edited for clarity

Here is the copper tongue scraper and I'm going to unbox it for us and then see how this is. So it comes with a 100% cotton bag which can be used for later storage and travel purposes. Here it is and that's how it looks. It has nice handles to hold and it's done with a nice soft smooth surface that it doesn't abrase the tongue.

Tongue scraper is the most easiest daily routine that you can incorporate. If you are new to Ayurvedic habits, I would say you start off first doing the tongue scraping. And then the tongue scraping is pretty simple. After you brush your teeth, you go from the center of the tongue, side of the tongue, and side of the tongue. And then just rinse it, wash it, and leave it on your counter.

This simple routine of scraping the tongue can help you in many ways. One, it takes away bad breath. […] Three, it helps to improve the taste perception. Ayurveda also says there are toxins that can affect the tongue and affect the mental performance. And when we clean the tongue, it will help us to communicate better and then have a clear perception of taste. […]

Habit Two · Gum Powder

Next in our 100 years of routine is the gum powder. So gum powder is to strengthen the gums, improve their circulation, and help with teeth health because gum health directly impacts our teeth health. […]

Habit Three · Swish Oil

The next item is swish oil. So swish oil is the one which is now becoming quite well known for oil pulling purposes. Athreya's swish oil is specially formulated to help with oral health, salivary secretions, and also the mucus coating in the mouth, teeth health, and enamel. It has organic sesame oil, organic clove oil, nutmeg oil, such great stuff that is going to help with the entire oral cavity and the mouth including the tongue and salivary glands.

Quick Answer

What is the Ayurvedic morning mouth routine?

It is the first chapter of dinacharya, the Ayurvedic daily routine: scrape the tongue with copper, massage the gums with herbal powder, and swish a spoonful of herbal oil. About ten minutes, before food and before coffee. Every piece comes in the Daily Routine Box, and each is also available on its own.

Habit One · The Tongue Scraper

How do you scrape your tongue — and why copper?

In Jay’s own words, after you brush your teeth: “you go from the center of the tongue, side of the tongue, and side of the tongue. And then just rinse it, wash it, and leave it on your counter.” It is the habit he tells beginners to start with:

"Tongue scraper is the most easiest daily routine that you can incorporate. If you are new to Ayurvedic habits, I would say you start off first doing the tongue scraping."

And the copper is not decoration: it has been the traditional metal for tongue scrapers in Ayurveda for centuries. The copper Tongue Scraper from Athreya has smooth handles, a soft edge that does not abrase the tongue, and comes with a 100% cotton bag for storage and travel.

Habit Two · Gum Powder

What does gum powder actually do?

Healthy gums hold the whole smile up, and this is the minute most morning routines skip. From Jay’s teaching:

"Gum powder is to strengthen the gums, improve their circulation, and help with teeth health because gum health directly impacts our teeth health."

How it is used: dip a wet toothbrush into the powder, massage it onto the gums, wait a few minutes, rinse. Healthy Gum Powder from Athreya is built on the classic Triphala blend.

Habit Three · Swish Oil

What is oil pulling, honestly?

Oil pulling, plainly: swish one teaspoon of oil in the mouth for about five minutes, then spit it out — never swallow. In Jay’s words:

"Athreya's swish oil is specially formulated to help with oral health, salivary secretions, and also the mucus coating in the mouth, teeth health, and enamel. It has organic sesame oil, organic clove oil, nutmeg oil."

Vaidya Jay's Notes

Yes, it is made for daily use. Swish one teaspoon for about five minutes, then spit it out. Never swallow the oil.
