Kutki (or KATUKI in Ayurveda) is derived from the word katu. The literal meaning of this term is pungency with bitterness.

Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa) is part of the Scrophulariaceae. It is commonly found in the Himalayan region at an altitude of 3000-5000 m.
