In Sanskrit, Triphala literally means three fruits. This name refers to its unique Ayurvedic formula, which combines the goodness of Emblica officinalis (Amalaki), Terminalia bellerica (Vibhitaki), and Terminalia chebula (Haritaki). A gray-green and flaky bark covers its crooked trunk and spreading branches. Its leaves are closely set together and are 4-8 inches long. They resemble pinnate leaves with their light green hues.

Amalaki flowers come in greenish-yellow colors. They bear depressed globose fruits that contain brown seeds. These fleshy fruits turn light yellow or brick red when they are ripe.

Vibhitaki

Vibhitaki is a large deciduous tree that measures up to 66 feet. It grows throughout the Indian forests and plains with broadly elliptic leaves that cluster together to form a distinctive rounded crown.

Its greenish-yellow flowers are simple and sweet. They grow in axillary spikes and secrete a strong honey-like smell. They bear green fruits that are in size and turn yellow when they mature.

Haritaki

Native to southern Asia and India, the deciduous tree, Haritaki, grows up to 100 feet in height. Its cylindrical bole bears rounded, spreading branches that sprout long elliptical shape leaves. Their leaves have an acute tip and cordate base.

It produces short-stalked, dull white to yellow flowers with a pungent smell with terminal spikes or short panicles. The fruits are yellowish-green (1-2 inches long) with an oval seed.

The smooth, yellowish-green ovoid drupes reach 1-2 inches long and about 1/2inch broad and inside, they contain one oval seed.
