Quick Answer

What is Triphala ghee for the eyes?

Triphala ghee, also called Triphala Gritham, is ghee prepared with Triphala, the classical Ayurvedic blend of amalaki, vibhitaki and haritaki. Ayurveda traditionally counts it among the great rejuvenators for the eyes. According to Vaidya Jay, a tiny amount touched to the eyes each night lets them soak in the ghee and stay lubricated.

In his words, "Ghee is for eating, but this is a special ghee called Triphala ghee, which you eat through your eyes."

The Ghee

Why does Ayurveda put ghee in the eyes?

Ghee carries herbs into the body, and in this case the doorway is the eye. Triphala is the same three-fruit formula Ayurveda trusts for the gut. Cooked into ghee, the sages turned it toward the eyes. Vaidya Jay says:

"This is one of the great rejuvenators that the great sages of Ayurveda have put together for promoting eye health and eye longevity."

The Tears

Why do your eyes water with Triphala ghee?

The watering is part of the ritual. Vaidya Jay teaches that the tears are where seeing begins:

"Tears are the first layer of entry of light into your eyes."

And why at night? Vaidya Jay says the ritual is as much about rest as it is about the eyes:

"More than anything, after this is done, it'll help you to get quality sleep."

And in the morning, in his words, "eyes are bright and so gently rejuvenated."

This pairs with the cooling ritual from the same day of filming. Read How Do You Refresh Tired Eyes in 30 Seconds? for Vaidya Jay's rose water eye pads and alochaka pitta, the pitta of the eyes.

Vaidya Jay, in his own words · lightly edited for clarity

This is a traditional Ayurvedic teaching. It is education, not medical advice.

Ghee is for eating, but this is a special ghee called Triphala ghee, which you eat through your eyes. I see you blurry. My tears are getting enriched. When I wake up in the morning, eyes are bright and so gently rejuvenated. This is one of the great rejuvenators that the great sages of Ayurveda have put together for promoting eye health and eye longevity.

Now let me show you how do you make it part of your daily routine. I do this every night. I take a tiny bit of it and then put it in my eyes and let my eyes get lubricated with this ghee. Are you ready? Are you committing for great eyes for the years to come? Let me show you.

The ghee. You start off by washing your hands clean and drying them. Take a bit on your fingertips like that, on pinkies, and then you go look this way and touch your eye, go liquid and touch your eye, and then just let your eyes soak in that ghee. Roll your eyes clockwise on anti-clockwise, clockwise, clockwise, anti-clockwise. Do that few times, and your eyes will start watering.

Tears are the first layer of entry of light into your eyes. If they are dry, we don't get the real color, the hue, the form. The ghee that we are using is like a tonic for the entire surface of the eyes. What the ghee is doing is cleaning up my eyes. It's also capable of […] calming down my eyes. Pitta in the eyes gently calms down, and the irritation goes away.

More than anything, after this is done, it'll help you to get quality sleep. So that's why I do it in the night. I finish this by gently pressing my eyes with soft tissue, and then I go to sleep.
