Quick Answer
What is Ayurvedic hair care?
Ayurvedic hair care is a daily beauty routine for healthy, shiny hair, looking after the hair from the scalp outward with herbs and herbal oils. It begins with Bhringaraj, the herb Ayurveda has traditionally valued most for hair. According to Vaidya Jay, the heart of it is the scalp massage with Neelibringadhi oil, followed by an herbal wash, with a serum for the lashes and brows.
In his words, "And the king of all the routines is the scalp and the body massage."

Step 1 · The Herb
What is Bhringaraj, and why is it used for hair?
Bhringaraj (Eclipta alba) is a traditional Ayurvedic herb valued for its nourishing, rejuvenating and balancing properties, and it is widely known as a key herb for hair care. Ayurveda has traditionally used it to nourish the hair follicles and to help maintain strong, healthy looking hair as part of a balanced routine.
It is the herb behind the whole routine. Bhringaraj is one of the two herbs that give Neelibringadhi oil its name, and the powder is the herb on its own: carefully sourced and minimally processed to preserve its natural potency.
Step 2 · The Oil
How do you oil the scalp the Ayurvedic way?
With a slow massage, and with the right oil. In Vaidya Jay's daily routine the scalp massage comes with the body massage, and he names the oil it starts with:
"So we start the scalp massage or the head massage with Neelibringadhi oil. Neelibringadhi oil is the celebrated oil for scalp health, hair health and also health of the head and neck region in general."
Neelibringadhi Thailam brings together two of India's most celebrated hair botanicals, Bhringraj and Neelini, in a rich sesame oil base, and regular use may help support a balanced scalp, healthy looking volume and natural shine. It can be used as a gentle scalp massage oil, as an overnight mask, or before washing the hair, and it fits into Dinacharya, the daily Ayurvedic routine.

Step 3 · The Wash
What is an Ayurvedic herbal hair wash?
A wash made from herbs instead of foaming chemistry. Athreya's Healthy Hair Wash is a powder: it nourishes the hair, conditions it for a soft texture, and helps maintain its natural color and shine.
It also cares for the scalp. The wash gently purifies the surface of the scalp and breaks down the occasional buildup, and the massaging motion of washing promotes circulation to the scalp. After the oil, it is the natural next step.
Step 4 · The Lashes and Brows
Can Ayurveda care for lashes and brows?
Yes. Lashes and brows are hair too, and in Vaidya Jay's daily routine they get their own step:
"Eyelash serum is amazing. It not only helps with the eye health, eyelashes and eyebrows."
And what is inside it, in his words: "The base is organic castor oil and then it has three classical Ayurvedic oils".
The serum is lightweight and botanical, made to condition and hydrate delicate hair for fuller looking lashes and beautifully defined brows. It is gentle enough for daily use.
