Quick Answer
What do you drink after a workout in Ayurveda?
A post-workout drink in Ayurveda is something that tonifies you and gives you some strength back. Vaidya Jay makes his as a smoothie: one scoop of Ashwamaca Jam, a whole avocado, almond milk and a couple of figs, blended thick. According to Vaidya Jay, the figs and almond milk bring calcium so the body replenishes itself, and the jam brings the nutrients the muscles need.
In his words, "We are all looking for something to tonify us and give us some strength, especially after workout."
Key Takeaways
- 🌿 Four ingredients: one avocado, one scoop of Ashwamaca Jam, almond milk and a couple of figs. A knife and a blender.
- 🌿 The avocado comes out of its skin with the fingers, no spoon, no peeling.
- 🌿 Figs and almond milk are there for calcium. In Vaidya Jay's words, when you work out you need some calcium to your body.
- 🌿 Ashwamaca Jam, he says, has the nutrients you need for muscle. It is the jam from his two-herb energy blend.
- 🌿 Pulse first, then the smoothie setting. It pours so thick it falls from the jug.
- 🌿 Eat it with a spoon, or add a little more almond milk and drink it.
The Recipe · At a Glance
What are the steps, from the blender to the jar?
- Cut the avocado and push your fingers between the skin and the pulp. The pulp comes out on its own, all of it. Keep separating with a finger; it is going to get mushed anyway.
- One scoop of Ashwamaca Jam. The jam Vaidya Jay names, with the nutrients he wants for the muscles after a workout.
- Almond milk. Enough to blend. One of his two calcium sources.
- A couple of figs. Cut them if your blender needs it, or leave them out if you want less sweetness.
- Close the lid, pulse, then the smoothie setting. Pulse it, pulse that, pulse it, then let the smoothie setting run until it is nicely blended.
- Pour it out thick. Eat it with a spoon, or add a little more almond milk and drink it.
"Try it out for 100 years of great workout with Ashwamaca."
The Question · After a Workout
Why a drink after a workout?
Vaidya Jay opens with the thing everyone is after once the workout is done:
"We are all looking for something to tonify us and give us some strength, especially after workout."
The last time he used Ashwamaca as a morning post-workout drink, people wrote in to ask what else they could do with the jam. This smoothie is his answer. Ayurveda traditionally teaches that what you take in after effort should be nourishing and easy on the body, and he builds the glass that way: avocado for the body of the drink, figs and almond milk for calcium, Ashwamaca Jam for the muscles.
If the name is new to you, start with his guide to Ashwamaca, the two-herb energy blend, and the Longevity Collection it belongs to. For the jam itself, read on.
Step One · The Avocado
How does he take the avocado out of its skin?
A nice avocado, not from his garden this time, but a good one. He cuts it and then does not reach for a spoon:
"I'll show you this end as well. So, so you take the avocado and you push your fingers in between the skin and the pulp, and then the pulp kind of comes out automatically, all of it."
Keep separating with a finger until the skin is empty. It does not need to be neat; it is going to get mushed in the blender anyway. That is the whole avocado, into the jug.
Steps Three and Four · Figs and Almond Milk
Why figs and almond milk?
Almond milk goes in next, and then a couple of figs. Both are there for one reason:
"When you work out, you need some calcium to your body. So figs are considered to be one of the best sources of calcium. So is almond milk."
Ayurveda traditionally teaches that the body rebuilds itself after effort, and Vaidya Jay makes the drink to serve that:
"So I'm making it in a way that the body replenishes itself after the workout. Ashwamaca Jam has all the nutrients that you need for muscle."
Cut the figs if your blender needs the help, or leave them out if you want the smoothie less sweet. The calcium from the almond milk stays either way.
Step Two · Ashwamaca Jam
What does Ashwamaca Jam bring to the glass?
One scoop of Ashwamaca Jam is the whole reason the drink exists. In his words, Ashwamaca Jam has all the nutrients that you need for muscle. On the jar, Athreya describes it as a vegan, plant-based Ayurvedic formulation for active lifestyles, traditionally used to support sustained energy levels, stamina and endurance, and to support muscle health and recovery as part of a balanced lifestyle.
The two herbs behind the name are the subject of his May post, Ashwamaca: The Ancient Two-Herb Energy Blend That Outlasts Caffeine, and the jam sits in the Longevity Collection. If you already have the jar, this is what to do with it on a workout morning.
Steps Five and Six · Blend and Pour
How thick should it pour?
Everything is in the jug. Lid on:
"So you just close it, turn it on, pulse it, pulse that, pulse it, and then there's a smoothie set again."
Then the pour, and the reason this one is eaten as much as drunk:
"So thick. Definitely very, very thick. You can look, look at that. It just falls out, so creamy and rich."
Thick is the point. If you want a glass instead of a bowl, thin it:
"And then you can add a little more almond milk if you want to, but this can be like a, you know, by itself, you can eat it with a spoon, or you can add a little more and then drink it as well."
Scoop the rest out of the jug; there is more in there than you think. His verdict, with the spoon in his hand: "Oh my God, it's so good, so rich, so creamy, that you'll feel immediate effect of replenishment."

Vaidya Jay's Notes
Frequently asked questions.
What do you drink after a workout in Ayurveda?
Vaidya Jay says we are all looking for something to tonify us and give us some strength after a workout. His answer on camera is a smoothie: one scoop of Ashwamaca Jam, a whole avocado, almond milk and a couple of figs, blended thick enough to eat with a spoon.
How do you make the Ashwamaca Jam smoothie?
Cut the avocado and push your fingers between the skin and the pulp so the pulp comes out on its own. Put it in the blender with one scoop of Ashwamaca Jam, almond milk and a couple of figs. Close the lid, pulse it a few times, then run the smoothie setting until it is nicely blended, and pour it out.
How do you take the avocado out without a spoon?
Cut it, then push your fingers in between the skin and the pulp. Vaidya Jay says the pulp kind of comes out automatically, all of it; you just keep separating with a finger. It is going to get mushed in the blender anyway.
Why figs and almond milk after a workout?
According to Vaidya Jay, when you work out you need some calcium to your body, and figs are considered to be one of the best sources of calcium, as is almond milk. He makes the drink so the body replenishes itself after the workout.
What is Ashwamaca Jam?
It is the Athreya herbal jam Vaidya Jay scoops into the blender. Athreya describes it as a vegan, plant-based Ayurvedic formulation for active lifestyles, traditionally used to support sustained energy levels, stamina and endurance, and to support muscle health and recovery as part of a balanced lifestyle. It comes in a 20 oz jar.
Can I leave the figs out?
Yes. The figs bring calcium and sweetness. Cut them if your blender needs it, or leave them out if you want the smoothie less sweet. The avocado, the almond milk and the Ashwamaca Jam stay.
Should I eat it with a spoon or drink it?
Either. Vaidya Jay pours it out so thick it falls from the jug, creamy and rich, and says you can eat it by itself with a spoon. If you want to drink it, add a little more almond milk.
How much Ashwamaca Jam goes in?
One scoop, with one avocado, almond milk and a couple of figs. That is the whole recipe as he makes it in the video.

Vaidya Jay, in his own words · lightly edited for clarity
This is a traditional Ayurvedic teaching. It is education, not medical advice.
We are all looking for something to tonify us and give us some strength, especially after workout. And last time I did something with Ashwamaca as a morning post-workout drink, people wanted to know more: how can I do something else with Ashwamaca Jam? So here I have come up with something.
First thing is to cut the avocado. And this is a nice avocado, even though it's not from my garden, and this is a good quality avocado. Look at that. So when I take the avocado, I just take it out from my, from my fingers. I'll show you this end as well. So, so you take the avocado and you push your fingers in between the skin and the pulp, and then the pulp kind of comes out automatically, all of it. So you just have to use your finger and keep separating. Anyway, it is going to get mushed here. So that's the avocado.
And then I'm going to put one scoop of Ashwamaca Jam, almond milk, and then a couple of figs. When you work out, you need some calcium to your body. So figs are considered to be one of the best sources of calcium. So is almond milk. So I'm making it in a way that the body replenishes itself after the workout. Ashwamaca Jam has all the nutrients that you need for muscle. And then here goes all the ingredients, and it's time to blend it. So you just close it, turn it on, pulse it, pulse that, pulse it, and then there's a smoothie set again.
So now that this is nicely blended, let's pour it out and see how our post workout Ashwamaca smoothie looks like. So thick. Definitely very, very thick. You can look, look at that. It just falls out, so creamy and rich. And then you can add a little more almond milk if you want to, but this can be like a, you know, by itself, you can eat it with a spoon, or you can add a little more and then drink it as well. So there's a lot more to come out. Let me scoop it out. And then it looks fantastic.
Post-workout Ashwamaca energy smoothie.
Oh my God, it's so good, so rich, so creamy, that you'll feel immediate effect of replenishment. Try it out for 100 years of great workout with Ashwamaca.
